  10. Those of you who have land described by the Public Lands
  11. (Checkerboard Square) System are surely wondering what all the
  12. foregoing has to do with surveying land.  The Township and Range
  13. System was established to prevent the chaos of land claims
  14. boundaries, such as happened in the Eastern States.  An imaginary
  15. grid has been drawn upon the land.  Land is described by its
  16. location on this grid.

  18. A topographic map is the best way to understand the T&R system.
  19. Section lines are laid out and labeled on these maps, as well as
  20. roads, fences, buildings.  wells, streams, and much more.

  22. Often the topo map and a stroll around the property is plenty
  23. survey enuf.  Where it isn't, you must survey in the same way as
  24. we do here in the original Colonies [you do know that Kentucky
  25. was part of the Commonwealth of Virginia?].  Find a section
  26. corner or other good starting point on both the topo map and the
  27. ground.  Pick your next station.  Measure the direction and
  28. distance.  Continue around the line in question, or to the corner
  29. in question.

  31. Set the declination on your compass so that your section lines
  32. run north-south and east-west with those of your neighbors.  The
  33. grid may be wrong, but you can't change it.

  35. A section is one mile (5280 feet) on a side and contains 640
  36. acres.  When a section is quartered, each quarter has sides of a
  37. half mile long and contains 160 acres.  The four quarters are
  38. named for their locations: Northeast, SE, SW, NW.  These quarters
  39. can be quartered again into four 40 acre quarter quarters.  And
  40. again as necessary.

  42. There are occasional irregularities in the section lines.  This
  43. is usually where two survey crews met.  Again, the topo map is
  44. the best way to deal with the problem.
